An unforgettable tale of pain, suffering and salvation!

This story totally swept me away. Whether it was from the pain a suffering experienced by the family in this story as they watched their child suffer the indiscriminate cruelness of leukaemia or the fact that two people who clearly loved each other were separated only to be reunited, at a time when the future was so uncertain, this story ruined me, but in a way that only a well-written book and a beautiful story can do!

Review: Call Girl

So much more than I initially expected!!!

When I saw this books centred around a “Call Girl”, I was intrigued but at the same time hesitant. I usually avoid books involving sex workers but I was surprised to find this particular job description wasn’t what I expected. Instead of services involving sex, these call girls are simply women who join men on trips, at official functions or just for companionship.

With a strict boss and a no sex rule is that is 100% enforced, this job makes perfect sense for Lexi. Having a background like hers, and having moved around and repeatedly reinventing herself as a result, this job suits her needs. It allows her to move around the country and enables her to avoid being seen locally with the same man thus protecting those dearest to her, that is until she meets Ethan.

Ethan is the godson of Lexi’s boss and tries, and manages, to circumvent some of Ms Jackie’s strict rules. With a proposal for Lexi, Ethan tries to manipulate her into giving up all of her current clients in order to spend time exclusively with him but this would also mean that she would be seen with Ethan locally and that’s something of concern to Lexi. Much to Lexi’s chagrin, Ms. Jackie pushes her towards Ethan and despite having a strong dislike of the man, she reluctantly accepts his proposal and huge financial offering.

Ethan and Lexi’s initial storyline is that of an unlikely pairing with a strong dislike of each other’s personalities. That said when they did come to an understanding, I loved the connection that they both formed together. From this point, the story felt to be written in two parts, for reasons which become clear as you read on. Whilst I enjoyed Lexi and Ethan’s initial battles, I felt the story started to lose some of its focus as it became more about their sexual relationship with seemingly no direction to their story beyond their initial connection. But that is where I was completely wrong! This book then exploded into another altogether more sinister storyline as we find out the reasons behind Lexi’s need to keep relocating and her need to protect those closest to her. The romance, whilst still there, was pushed aside for an exciting romantic suspense story which kept me thoroughly entertained. Ethan lost some of his arrogance and became Lexi’s protector and this side of their relationship I absolutely loved. Whilst not wanting to reveal exactly what Lexi and Ethan face, I can say that there is pain, suffering and heartbreak which was totally unexpected.

The side characters in this story were as equally enchanting, from Joe who works in Ethan’s building and with whom Lexi develops a sweet friendship with, to Tanya and Travis, Ethan’s sister and lifelong friend and colleague. Each character has a part to play in this story and their involvements makes the story all the more rewarding.

So, unexpectedly, this book became a romantic suspense hidden within what initially seemed like a sweet romance. With both Lexi and Ethan hiding and running from their respective pasts, it becomes clear that Ms. Jackie saw something in each of them that would allow each to heal the pain and suffering experienced by the other. I would recommend sticking with the storyline if, like me, you find it a little tame and mellow in parts, the book’s strength is in its slow and steady development making it very rewarding read.

This is the first book that I’ve read by this author and I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed her writing. I am always a more harsh critic when reading something by a new to me author but I was thankful that I took a chance on this story. It has certainly left me with a lasting fondness for the characters and their emotional storyline.

Review: A Cruel Kind of Beautiful

A Cruel Kind of Beautiful A Cruel Kind of Beautiful by Michelle Hazen
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Such a sweet romance that gave me all the feels ❤️

I was expecting an a-typical rock star romance but this was the complete opposite, telling the story instead of a young and upcoming band trying to secure a record deal. The story about the band is only part of the overall book theme though as this focusses mainly on two characters: Jacob and Jera who find themselves meeting, unexpectedly, and immediately feeling an attraction to one another. Jera is avoiding boys after a string of unfortunate attempts at having a healthy sexual relationship but when Jacob, her paperboy, accidentally breaks her window she finds herself facing an altogether unexpected and not entirely unwanted emotion towards him.

Jacob is your loveable boy next door type of character. Despite facing his own personal battles, he is ridiculously sweet and caring towards Jera and is not about to be blown off by her avoidance tactics. I loved the way Jacob supported Jera as together they faced her demons and slowly but surely made her feel that she is not the broken shell of a girl she believes herself to be. What Jera faces in her young life is more realistic than most NA romance stories lead readers to believe. Sex is not always as perfect as it is portrayed in books and I commend the author for her realism and making her young character relatable, especially to readers in that age bracket.

This is a book for college romance lovers as well as those favouring a more musical theme. It’s also a new adult romance so there’s literally something for everyone. The story was well written and entertaining and held my interest throughout. I’ve been sitting on the fence between giving this story 4 or 5 stars but the more I think about, I do want to read this story again and again and for that, in my eyes, it has to have 5-stars!
