Bet in the Dark Bet in the Dark by Rachel Higginson
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This is a stand-alone contemporary/YA story from Rachel Higginson, hence my attraction to it. I’ve been slighted frustrated by cliff hangers recently and so I was looking for a read which was enjoyable, refreshing, drama free and I found it!!!!

I loved this book. It’s the first book by Rachel Higginson that I have read and it certainly won’t be the last. The story is well written and apart from the odd slightly frustrating typos it was brilliant.

The story centres on Ellie Harris a college student who finds herself in a financial predicament thanks to her MIA roommate, Tara (the T****!!!!). The person Ellie finds herself owing money to is the gorgeous Fin Hunter and despite telling him the debt isn’t hers, Ellie has to come to terms with finding a way to pay Fin back. Feelings between Ellie and Fin soon develop and despite Ellie’s misgivings about Fin and the debt she owes him she can’t help falling in love with him.

I loved Ellie’s character and her willpower. She was faced with a seriously good-looking man and resisted his charms for the sake of her integrity. Fin understands Ellie and respects her wishes but despite his admiration for her self-respect he challenges her emotions at every opportunity. Fin has a secret he is keen to protect but once Ellie finds out the real reason for needing his money back Ellie finds herself unable to fight her feelings for him any longer.

Ellie’s brothers are also adorable in their protectiveness of her and each could easily have their own spin off series. Their relationship with each other and also Ellie is hysterical and heart-warming.

The book is fun, light-hearted and also, for me, reminiscent of Jamie McGuire’s Beautiful books. I read this practically non-stop through the night so that for me warrants a big fat 5* review!!!!
