The Risk (Briar U #2) by Elle Kennedy

Boy does Elle Kennedy know how to satisfy me *cough*, in a literal sense. The characters, storylines, genres and tropes that she develops just tick all of my bookish sensibilities.

The Risk centres around Jake Connelly, the Harvard hockey captain, and his love interest, Brenna Jenson who happens to be the daughter of Briar University hockey team coach and also Jake’s team’s closest rivals. I was intrigued as to how Elle Kennedy would play match-maker with these two conflicting characters and the idea of a fake relationship was perfect.

Brenna is desperate to secure a journalism internship at a sports media company and when her application to Hockeynet starts to turn sour, thanks to a misogynistic executive, she comes to realise that Jake may be her ticket in.

Jake and Brenna have been skirting around their attractions to each other. Their sexual banter and verbal dualling is part of what makes this story a real hit, but despite this, they know any sort of a relationship would be a nightmare for their respective teams in the run up to one of their biggest games. That said, the more they come together, the more the sparks fly. Brenna is a huge tease but knows how to back up her game, and Jake, despite his best intentions, falls for her wily ways.

As expected, there are also cameo appearances from the side characters that we have come to love, including a strange turn of events for Mike Hollis. I really didn’t see that story coming!

This is a loveable story, with some of the best characters, but despite this, there is a sadness to the story from Brenna’s perspective. Her relationship with her father is frayed, her past continues to haunt her and yet when she needs help Jake is there. I have to admit to having shed a tear or two at Brenna’s story and also how her relationship with her father broke down.

The Risk is a spellbinding read and I can’t wait to read more from Briar U and the author.

Blurb

A sexy standalone novel from New York Times and international bestselling author Elle Kennedy. THE RISK takes you back to the world of hot hockey players, feisty heroines, bro banter, and steamy scenes...

Everyone says I’m a bad girl. They’re only partly right—I don’t let fear rule me, and I certainly don’t care what people think. But I draw the line at sleeping with the enemy. As the daughter of Briar’s head hockey coach, I’d be vilified if I hooked up with a player from a rival team.

And that’s who Jake Connelly is. Harvard’s star forward is arrogant, annoying, and too attractive for his own good. But fate is cruel—I require his help to secure a much-coveted internship, and the sexy jerk isn’t making it easy for me.

I need Connelly to be my fake boyfriend.

For every fake date…he wants a real one.

Which means this bad girl is in big trouble. Nothing good can come from sneaking around with Jake Connelly. My father would kill me, my friends will revolt, and my post-college career is on the line. But while it’s getting harder and harder to resist Jake’s oozing sex appeal and cocky grin, I refuse to fall for him.

That’s the one risk I’m not willing to take.
