Reaper (Boston Underworld, #2)Reaper by A. Zavarelli
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

It’s official, Reaper has left me speechless. I’m sitting here trying to write a review about a book that was as close to perfect as I am going to find and I’m completely unable to express my emotions.

Whilst a dark story involving gangland violence, this book also tells the story of a beautifully broken man who is put back together by a stripper. Not your everyday fairytale I know, but Ronan and Sasha’s story worked, in perfect unison.

From the very first page I rekindled my love for Ronan. As a child, he was destined and trained to be a soldier monster. Found and saved by Lachlan Crow, he has since served his time as a Reaper for the MacKenna Syndicate. Being Crow’s righthand man means living a hard life but it’s no comparison to the pain and suffering her experienced as a child. Since his salvation, Ronan has inexplicably felt a connection to one of the club’s strippers, Sasha. Despite their initial, and unconventional connection, Ronan remains elusive and despite Sasha’s attraction to him, he keeps his distance from her. Ronan is almost a man-child in his innocence and his story certainly left me with a lump in my throat and a pull on my heartstrings. Despite being a hardened criminal, Ronan has no life lessons to speak of and finds himself in unchartered water when it comes to protecting Sasha.

Even though Ronan is reluctant to talk to Sasha, he is her ever present guardian angel and that for me made him all the more loveable. Despite the suffering Sasha is experiencing as she watches her mother’s health deteriorate, Ronan is always close at hand to take care of her. When Ronan’s resolve all but fails, they connect in a brutally physical way and it takes time for Sasha to draw some finesse out of this muscle bound killer. Their journey together was perfect and Ronan’s reactions to Sasha’s tender ministrations were beautiful.

Despite the darkness to this story, it is also both sad and comical at times. Talia is once again mentioned in this story. I had assumed that her story would have continued in the background but despite getting one answer about her current whereabouts, her story remains untold.

It’s difficult to express the ride this book takes you on but I can assure readers that this story is 50% darkness and 50% magic.
